Copper Metallic Paint – Guild Lane GILD Originals | Interior Gilding Enamel
Love the warmth and character of real copper but want an easy-to-use finish without the specialist techniques and time involved in traditional gilding?
Guild Lane GILD Originals Copper gives you a beautifully rich metallic finish straight from the pot — without the fuss of traditional gilding.
British-made and wonderfully easy to use, this water-based metallic enamel is packed with high-quality metallic pigments to create a smooth, lustrous and non-tarnishing finish.
GILD Copper is a rich, warm amber metallic with pink-orange undertones and a radiant, sun-warmed finish. Inspired by freshly exposed copper and sculptural metalwork, it catches the light beautifully, revealing subtle shifts between gold, orange and soft copper-red.
It's one of my favourite ways to bring warmth and richness to a project. Use it to highlight carved furniture details, transform frames and decorative objects, update metal hardware, edge ceramic coasters and serving trays or add a beautiful copper accent wherever your project needs a little something extra.
And because there's no specialist gilding equipment or adhesive required, it's equally suitable for experienced furniture artists and anyone simply wanting to get creative at home.

What Can I Use It On?
GILD Originals can be used on a surprisingly wide range of properly prepared interior surfaces, including:
- Metal
- Glass
- Glazed ceramic
- Plastic
- Polished stone
- Sealed wood
- Primed wood
- Primed plaster
- Primed canvas
- Resin
- Other suitably primed or sealed surfaces
For best results, your surface should be clean, dry and properly prepared.
Raw or porous wood should be sealed or primed before painting. Very smooth, glossy or non-porous surfaces may benefit from light sanding or a suitable primer to help with adhesion.

A little really can make all the difference — it's all in the detail.
How to Use
Stir thoroughly before every use to distribute the metallic pigments evenly.
Apply in thin, even coats using a good-quality brush, fine roller or sponge and allow the paint to self-level.
For smaller projects, fine details and those all-important finishing touches, my Artist's Brush Set is ideal for applying GILD. [Link to Artist's Brushes →]
One coat provides good coverage, but two thin coats are recommended for the smoothest, richest and most refined metallic finish. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second.
GILD can also be layered to create greater depth and texture, or used with stippling and blending techniques to create different decorative effects.
Always test your colour and finish on a small or inconspicuous area before beginning your project.
Drying & Curing
- Touch dry: approximately 30 minutes
- Ready to recoat: approximately 1 hour
- Fully cured: approximately 21 days
Allow the finish to cure fully before subjecting it to regular or heavier handling.
Coverage
A little GILD goes a surprisingly long way:
- 30ml: up to 1m²
- 60ml: up to 2m²
Actual coverage will vary depending on the texture, porosity and preparation of your surface.
Cleaning Your Brushes
Clean brushes and tools promptly after use with warm water and mild soap.
Extra Protection
GILD Originals creates a durable finish once fully cured and doesn't normally require additional protection for decorative interior use.
For frequently handled surfaces or projects requiring extra durability, apply a suitable compatible varnish or clear topcoat. Always test first.
Mix Your Own Metallic Shade
Fancy experimenting?
All GILD colours can be mixed together to create your own custom metallic shades. Start with small amounts, mix thoroughly and make a note of your proportions if you'd like to recreate the colour later.
The GILD Originals Collection
GILD Originals are available in five beautiful metallic shades:
Silver | Bronze | Champagne | Copper | Rose Gold
Each offers the same easy-to-use, buildable metallic finish, so you can choose the perfect shade for your project — or mix them to create something completely your own.
